God’s free gift of salvation is available to everyone, no matter what we’ve done. Even the most wicked and evil person in the whole world can be forgiven and accepted by God.

No matter what your sins are, God wants you to come to Him and get to know Him. He will accept you with open arms with such love and forgiveness, it is beyond our human comprehension.

When you seek God’s forgiveness through Jesus Christ, there is no one right way to do so, but if you’re like most of us, having an example of what to pray can be very helpful.

No, it won’t cause a heavenly light to suddenly shine on you, and angels won’t suddenly appear with great singing and praise, but you can be sure that if your heart is in the right place, God will hear your prayer and your sins will be washed away and forgotten by Him, giving you a clean slate.

Below is one example of a sinner’s prayer. When you go to pray, find a quiet place where you can be alone. Maybe it’s a bathroom, a closet, your bedroom, wherever it is, it is best if you are able to avoid distractions and be able to speak freely.

While you can pray this silently, it is actually best if you say the words quietly but out loud, as hearing yourself say them has power in helping you to remember your commitment to God and strengthening your resolve when faced with temptation.

The Prayer for Forgiveness

Heavenly Father,

I come before You to ask for Your forgiveness. I know that I am a terrible sinner and have offended You in my thoughts, words, and actions.

There is not one good thing in me, Lord. I am very evil by nature and have sinned against you and transgressed your law. I am full of distrust and unbelief, I am weak and make bad choices when I am tempted. What good can be expected of me?

Lord, I know I have done wrong and I want to make myself right with You. I need Your truth, I need Your strength, I need Your faith, and I need Your character so that I can change my ways and live the way You want me to.

I know You sent Your son, Jesus Christ, to pay the price for my sins and I trust in the merits of that divine blood that was shed, so that even I, one of the most undeserving human beings, can be forgiven and spend eternity with You.

Lord, You are the way, the truth, and the light, and I ask You to please come into my life and transform me into a person clothed in Your righteousness and that brings You glory.

Father, thank You for dealing with us with such great mercy and grace, having pity on us and remembering that You made us from dust. You know the spiritual war that is waged on us every day and I ask You to cut down all the strongholds Satan has in my life and help me to surrender my life fully to You.

Amen.

When you pray, you don’t have to say the prayer word for word, make it personal to you and your situation.
